Flights to Bolivia
Bolivia is one of South America’s most diverse countries. Bordered by Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Chile, and Peru, Bolivia is often called the Tibet of the Americas because it is so secluded. It is one of only two South American countries to not border an ocean.
The capital of Bolivia is La Paz, founded in 1542 in the Andes Mountains. Sagarnaga Street is the main shopping area in La Paz and you will be able to find many examples of local handicrafts here. The Witches market is very intriguing. For sale are llama fetuses, dried frogs used in ancient rites, soapstone, aphrodisiacs, and the Bolivian national instrument, the Charargo. Similar to a guitar, you will hear the Charargo played throughout Bolivia.
Outside of La Paz is the Valle de la Luna. A very popular tourist attraction, Valle de la Luna is a collection of dreamlike weathered rocks. Tours leave several times daily from La Paz to the site.
Potosi is a village in the southern central part of Bolivia. It is one of the richest towns on the continent stemming from the discovery of silver deposits here. The town is welcoming and picturesque with narrow streets, colonial mansions, and churches. It has the honor of being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Bolivia is home to the highest lake on earth. Lake Titicaca borders both Bolivia and Peru. On the Bolivian side is Copacabana, an exotic resort. Bolivia also boasts the world’s highest ski runs at Chacaltaya, outside of La Paz.
The native foods of Boliva are representative of the Andean Indian heritage. Meat and potatoes, (papas), are a stable of the Bolivian diet. Salchipap, a mixture of sliced sausage and papas can be found all over the country. You will also find out of the ordinary dishes like Charque Kan or llama jerky.
Coca leaves flourish in Bolivia. Many locals still chew the leaves and it is legal to do so. The leaves are considered a pick-me-up and can suppress hunger. The saying in Bolivia is “coca no es cocaine”, coca is not cocaine.
There are two main airports in the country. One is located in La Paz, the other in Santa Cruz. You can fly direct from Spain on the European continent and from Miami in North America. Visitors on holiday and wanting to explore the culture of Bolivia should fly into La Paz and use it as a home base. For a warm weather resort holiday you will want to fly into Santa Cruz. No matter which destination you choose, you will find the Bolivians very welcoming and happy to have you as a guest.
